Nutrition & Wellness

One of the biggest challenges we face is to keep healthy. Fortunately, there are many solutions to this dilemma. Whether it’s providing water and sanitation to a community, or improving the way we eat and drink, we have the power to improve our health one way or another. The problems associated with out of control medical expenses can be slashed. Sort out water and sanitation... and empty 50% of hospital beds around the world. Stamp out obesity and other issues associated with bad diets... yep, empty out a load more beds! We don’t have to be a sick planet. We can do better. Visit our food and health pages to read and watch how you can use nutrition to your advantage - and for the betterment of mankind and the planet.

Solar Power & Heating

Another huge challenge we face is climate change and a sensible way to generate power for an energy hungry world. Fossil fuels won’t last forever - and are polluting the planet in the short term. By using each and every rooftop as a solar power generating power station, we can put a huge dent in our appetite for fossil fuels. We don’t have to wait for a new invention to turn this problem around. We simply need to have the appetite to put a sincere effort into being generators of power, rather than simply consumers. Obviously there are challenges to making this happen, but aren’t there challenges to so many things in life? This problem has a solution. Visit the earth section of our site to learn more.

Growing Your Own Food

There are so many reasons to get into growing your own organic food. Satisfaction, taste, freshness, good nutrition, money saving, healthy... the list goes on. You’ll also get a nice workout in the yard - much more enjoyable than pretending to be a hamster on a treadmill at the local gym. Whether you have ambitious designs, or simply wish to grow a few select herbs and veggies - a favorite type of tomato for example, start growing your own food and getting in touch with what is fueling your body. These sections are devoted to ideas, information, recipes - and all things food related. Visit the garden and food sections of our site for more information.

Xeriscape Design

OK, now that you’re using some of your yard to grow food, now what to do with the rest of the space? Xeriscape, or dry-scape, is a set of principles for water-wise landscaping. It’s all about planning and maintaining your landscape and watering efficiently. This sensible approach allows you to conserve water while enjoying an attractive yard. Xeriscape is based on seven water-wise landscape principles. Whether you’re developing a new landscape, renovating an existing one, or just looking for ways to conserve water in an urban environment, proper planning and design are essential to creating a landscape that is water-wise.

Composting Your Waste

Once you stop throwing your organic waste in the trash, you will notice a huge reduction in how much waste goes into your trash bin for hauling to a local landfill. There are several ways that you can benefit from using your scraps, from making compost for your garden, to setting up a vermiculture system and feeding some of the food to your worms. The “tea” that is generated is black gold - something your plants are sure to love. For more on composting and other ways to reduce your waste footprint, visit the garden and earth sections of our site. We also have a short video posted here that you can watch about composting. Finally, you can also read about compost bin designs at www.cultivatorscorner.com.

Water Conservation & Rainwater Harvesting

Yes, we’ve put water at the top of the list. Why? Simply stated... no water, no life. And on that note, regardless of new technologies or innovations, the number one solution to saving water is to use less water.  Whether through improved farming techniques, rainwater harvesting, different types of garden designs, or the ways we approach our daily activities, there are numerous ways that we can all make a difference by using less water than we currently do. As Benjamin Franklin said, “When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.” It is up to us to ensure that the well doesn’t run dry.
